Team D - Survey Report

Our team collected 35 responses. 19 boys and 16 girls from 11 schools out of which 14 were affiliated to State.

Summary of Results

• Almost all having Malayalam as their mother tongue, two Tamil and 1 Tulu.
• Majority of them reading, only 3 said they did not like to read.
• The favourite leisure activity for the majority was reading.
• Lack of time was the reason for most of the students for not reading books
• English is the favoured language
• Most students read for information and most of them read twice a week
• Maximum spend about 1-2 hours for reading books, when they are reading.
• 23 students said they visit their school library other periods also to get books issued
• Most consulted books in the library are encyclopedias and GK or Fact books
• Majority of students read newspapers daily, but do not read the magazines regularly. The Hindu was the favourite newspaper in most cases. Most of the students like to read the Sports Section of the newspaper.
• More than 90% have newspaper subscription at home.
• 60% students said School Library as the main source for reading materials, by majority depend on Internet for collecting information
• Majority of the students agreed that reading is important and reading habit is declining.
• 45% students like to read in the night. JK Rowling was the most favourite author and Harry Potter was the favourite book for most of the students we surveyed.

What we suggest

• Allot more reading time and more library periods to the students
• The school library must have a good collection with the latest story books, classics,  GK books and all other types of books
• More competitions and activities from the school library
• Morning assembly programs like the character parade contest we had in our school to attract students
• School library website and blogs
• Not only prizes to be awarded to the best readers, grades must be given for reading more books
• Library should be attractive
• Posters and banners about reading and books in the school
• Reading project for lower classes to be started
