What I learned! My experiences of the project...

The whole project was a nice experience. I Vishnu v Kumar, Pranesh, Nirupam, Surya, Vineeth and Mujib sir, our librarian went together to  the book shops and the pubic library.  We first went to A.A book Center and Lending Library to interview the manager, Mr.  S .Khaja Maidheen.  Surya, Nirupam and I took the role of interviewers and Pranesh agreed to take note of the proceedings. Vineeth was ready with the digital camera to take photographs and record the interview.

We were a bit nervous when we went to interview him.  He informed us that now-a-days children are not having the habit of reading. We asked him many questions, and he replied to these questions calmly and softly. They have a very good collection of books and used to conduct book surveys in many schools. He told us that they are organizing a book fair in a near by school that day. Here it was quiet noisy as the shop was nearby to the National Highway. Still we managed to conduct the interview, better than we expected.

Next we went to the H&C Stores. This time we were a little more confident about the interview but if we asked the questions too fast it would be difficult for Pranesh to note it down. We introduced ourselves and the manager welcomed us. His name was Mr. Sree Hari. He also told us that reading habits of students are declining but those who likes to read regularly comes to his shop and there is not much decrease in the book sales.

We visited Current Books, a branch of DC Books.  As usual Surya introduced the group, I and Nirupam asked questions & Pranesh wrote down the answers.  Mr. Ramachandran, Manager,  was the first person to tell that reading habit among  children have not declined and that the reading habit will never die. We spend more time here as the manager was very enthusiastic talking about the shop. When we finished the interview, he thanked us for taking such a socially relevant issue and showing interest in the topic and making the effort to conduct the survey.

The final destination public Library of Palakkad, and here comes the second person to tell that reading habit among children have not declined.  Her name was Latha. L, Librarian of Public Library Palakkad. The library was full of readers, including some college students and some grown-ups. Now we were very confident, we could speak with the librarian without much inhibition. She replied to all the questions. We were surprised to hear that there are more than one lakh books in the library and daily more than 200 members visit the library to read books and magazines.

The experience was not only informative, but interesting too. This was the first time I participated in such an activity and I could learn many things. I am confident that I could do much better in days to come. The confidence I gained from speaking to all these people was much more than I expected. Earlier we have done some survey of students in my area. But I loved the interview part most.
I really thank librarian sir for taking me in to this project and I would also like to thank our principal madam for allowing us to visit the bookshops and conduct the interviews.
